About Alice Brierley

For nearly fifty years, Brierley Electrolysis has offered GTA residents the latest in hair removal technology. “The business started with my mother in 1959” says owner Alice Brierley, a Certified Professional Electrologist and Laser Technician. “In 1984, I started working with her, and when she retired, I took over.” Brierley Electrolysis utilizes both electrolysis and laser hair removal methods in order to achieve the best results for clients.

The electrolysis process removes unwanted hairs one at a time through the insertion of a fine filament (about the width of a hair) into the hair follicle. A very low electrical current then flows through the filament into the follicle, destroying the lower two-thirds. The hair is removed, and will not grow back.

Electrolysis was first invented in the 1890’s, and has continued to evolve over the decades. Laser hair removal is comparatively newer, having been first used in 1996, and has a host of additional benefits. “With the laser, I can sit a client on the table, and do an entire area in one sitting, often with far fewer additional treatments,” says Brierley.

“It’s a much faster process.” While laser hair removal can have permanent results, it is considered to be a method for long-term reduction because of how it works. The laser hair removal process involves light energy being delivered in a series of pulses. This light, much like normal light, freely floats through skin to be absorbed by the comparatively dark hairs. The Dark hairs absorb the light, which heats the hair enough to destroy the cell. The hair then falls out. As the laser light floats through skin, it also has a tendency to float through lighter coloured blond, red and grey hairs. “With blonds and redheads, the percentage of hair that is destroyed is less than dark hair,” says Brierley. “For those hairs, I’ll do both treatments, starting with the laser and finishing up with electrolysis.”

Brierley says one of the main misconceptions people have about laser hair removal is the level of pain they will experience. “The laser I use right now is the gentlest on the skin,” says Brierley. “It doesn’t hurt any more than wax- ing or plucking - in fact, I’ve had several clients tell me waxing is more painful.”

Brierley Electrolysis practices the highest levels of infection control and sterilization. Disposable probes are used only once, and all equipment is dry-heat sterilized to meet government standards. Brierley Electrolysis is located at 2610 Weston Road, Suite 203, close to the 401. Free parking is available.
